UN Warns of Global Economic Fallout as Tariff Wars Threaten Cascade Effect

A senior United Nations official has warned that rising protectionist measures could trigger a “cascade” of retaliatory tariffs, deepening the strain on an already slowing global economy. Speaking at a global trade forum, the official cautioned that escalating trade tensions risk undermining fragile supply chains, reducing investment, and stoking inflation across both developed and developing nations.

“As countries respond to economic pressures with unilateral tariffs, we risk entering a cycle of retaliation that could damage global trade for years,” the official said, urging nations to seek cooperative solutions rather than resorting to trade barriers.

The warning comes amid mounting concerns over economic fragmentation, with major economies reevaluating trade policies in the face of geopolitical rivalries, inflationary pressures, and weakened growth forecasts. The UN emphasized the need for multilateral dialogue to prevent trade wars from compounding existing vulnerabilities in global markets.

Analysts say the risk of a tariff-driven slowdown is especially high in sectors such as manufacturing, agriculture, and technology, which depend heavily on cross-border inputs and export markets. Without coordinated action, the official warned, global economic recovery could be derailed.
